When did the Merc open?

The building was purchased in 2008 and opened in 2011 after a three-year renovation.

What is the history of the building?

See “Our Story” to learn about the history of the Draper Mercantile.

Who are the owners?

The Draper Mercantile is owned by Debbie and Bill Gardner, however there are other small businesses owners in Thee Draper Village as well.

What is the history of the New River Trail?

The New River Trail State Park, located adjacent to the Draper Mercantile, follows the path of the Norfolk & Western Railroad, which was initially built for iron ore transportation in the late 19th century. The trail’s conversion from a railway corridor into a recreational space showcases the evolution of transportation infrastructure and natural resource use. The trail opened as a park in 1987 and became a Millenium Legacy Trail in 1999. Today, it offers visitors a glimpse into the region’s history and scenic beauty.

What is there to do in Draper?

There’s lots to do on your visit to Draper! After you dine with us, take a walk through the various shoppes in the village: Marc Jr. (our children’s store located on the right side of the Village), the Market located in the main Merc, the Curious Quill (unique gifts and unusual finds) located to the left of the Merc, the Draper Blooms Tea Room (also located to the left of the Merc). When you’re done shopping, you can either take a hike on the New River Trail, or experience our Labyrinth at Merc Farms. On your way out of town, stop by for an Ice Cream at the Conery, let the kids play at the Draper Community Park or even stop for a glass of wine at Spinning Jenny Vineyards down the road.

What started the Draper Village?

The Draper Village started with the purchase of a cabin on the New River, which was a vacation home to the Gardner’s and their children. After falling in love with the area, they began renting their home and others, and wanted a place for guests to see the cultural art and food of the region. The Draper Mercantile with it’s history was a perfect fit, and after a 3 year restoration, the village began to grow and grow with more buildings coming for sale for renovation and expansion of the village.
